Calvin Carter

Merging media for a multifaceted artist.
Photography | Art Direction | Photo Retouching

A portrait is a time capsule, and at this moment in time, designer Calvin Carter was re-envisioning himself as something more than just a designer. He wanted to be portrayed as an artist and experimenter of media, and so our collaboration began — in portrait and in paint.

Interrupting the digital creative process
Our initial goal was to create imagery that looked like poetry. When so many images today feel overly digitally manipulated, we strived to explore the opposite — to create something deeply analog and human.

Letting chaos guide the process
We created a series of paintings guided by random hand movements, and at times, we controlled each other’s arms while painting to encourage unexpected outcomes.
